Covenant Righteousness

August 16th, 2009 · No Comments

Romans 1:18-25 serves as the foundational passage of this teaching that explores the Biblical concept of righteousness and its relationship to faith,

Paul’s larger objective is to present the all nations to God as an acceptable sacrifice. Dr. Hartmann then goes on to elaborate on the fact that saving faith is always rooted in repentance. He goes on to explain that by means of the Gospel that Paul preaches righteousness is continually being revealed and that proceeds from faith to faith.

Righteousness is essentially a relational concept, so that one does righteousness, so one is righteous and fulfills the obligations on one who is in relationship to another. Simply put, one is righteous by doing the right thing. God’s Law determines the right thing.

Righteousness is status too and has to do with justice. Are cited from the Old Testament Genesis 38, in the account of Tamar & Judah, 1 Samuel 24 in the account of David and Saul.

What constitutes righteousness? God is righteous, in the covenant He makes with his people, and when He, within the context of that covenant, does what He has promised. God does not just have a righteous nature – He does what is righteous.

Dr. Hartmann closes by citing elements of righteousness that are exemplified in the following passages: Nehemiah 9:6-9, 1 Kings 8:23-24, Deuteronomy 6:24, Ezekiel 18

July 26th, 2009 · No Comments

Dr. Hartmann fills in additional information about the history and state of the church at Rome from numerous sources including an anonymous fourth century commentator on the epistles of Paul named Ambrosiaster.

A broad outline of Paul’s intentions in the epistle include answering questions about how does the Gospel becomes effectual for salvation, do faith or faith and works count to affect righteousness before God, what is one to make of the Jews place in salvation history during the church age in light of multiple passages within the Old Testament, and how to live the Christian life together in community.

The Apostolic Mission Statement

July 19th, 2009 · No Comments

God is calling us at this late hour to participate in and carry to completion the work of the apostles, especially Paul. The baton has been passed to us. We are not to measure ourselves by the standards of this day. Nor should we compare ourselves to others in our day. God’s mission is a noble purpose that the apostles and others have lived, sacrificed, and died for. It transcends the restoration of apostolic truth and doctrine. But it will require deep saturation in and application of apostolic truth and doctrine to bring the work to completion. This work will require salvation being expressed in a collective dimension. Romans 1:1-7, Romans 15:14-17, Romans 12:1-2

The God of All Comfort

July 12th, 2009 · No Comments

Dr. Hartmann explores a wonderful passage from 2 Corinthians 1:3-7.

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation. (2Cor.1:3-7)

He then goes on to was a very broad brushed outlined some of the types of suffering Christians experience, including suffering that is a result of the fall, the effects of our own sins, and suffering that is a result of obedience to God.

Dr. Hartmann issues exhortation to embrace suffering, as we keep our vision focused upon the future glory that will be revealed according to Romans 8:18-22.

Additionally, in light of the amazing love of God which motivated him to create us for a future glory that is to be revealed within us when we see Him- we should seek to purify ourselves even as He is pure according to 1 John 3:1-3.

Pray Without Ceasing

June 15th, 2009 · No Comments

1 Thessalonians 5:17 serves as the foundation for this encouraging word to pray. Dr. Hartmann reminds us that troubling times are coming and we are not going to be able to persevere unless we do so. Because there is opposition and darkness in the earth even as
1 John 4:1-4 describes the spirit of anti-Christ currently in the world today. This spirit of Antichrist seeks to act like the Antichrist described in Daniel 7:25 that seeks to wear out the saints of the Most High.

Dr. Hartmann uses Psalm 9:10 to exhort the saints to know God’s character and put their trust in Him. Romans 15:4-6 is a prayer that Dr. Hartmann has been praying for the saints namely that God will strengthen his people and encourage them.

Perseverance in prayer is taught in the parable of the widow and the judge in Luke 18:1-8. Now sometimes people pray for the wrong things. James 4:2-7 says sometimes unanswered prayer is because we pray according to our own desires instead of according to the will of God. Sometimes it is really good to not get prayers answered that are not according to His will. As a matter of fact, sometimes it is a form of God’s judgment to give people their desires.

Instead we should be acting as Jesus is described in Psalm 40:6-8. Jesus delighted to do God’s will. We too need to delighted in doing God’s will.

God wants us to be partakers of His holiness. He chastens so that we can be partakers of his holiness.

Prayer is critical in the last days. Luke 21:34-36 exhorts us to not let our hearts be carried away with the cares of this life or abandon the faith. Instead we need to be in prayer. 1 Peter 4:7 exhort us to be sober and watch unto prayer.

Colossians 4:2-4 cents to devote yourselves to prayer. This means that we must put time into it, keep alert, and maintain an attitude of gratitude. A critical prayer elements requires us to ask God to open a door for His Word to go forth.

Matthew 6:9-13 is the account of what is called the Lords Prayer. It is a good model of prayer.

Matthew 7:7-11 & Luke 11:5-13 teach us to ask seek and knock. God wants to give you good things. Be importunate and shameless like the guy asking his neighbor for a loaf of bread to feed his guest.

Matthew 21-12-13 says God’s house is to be a house of prayer. A house of prayer requires a people of prayer, not merely a program of prayer.

Some reasons God want us to pray include but are not limited to having communion with him, growing in our trust towards God, and to participate in his work.

Dr. Hartmann closes with an exhortation to persevere in prayer until Jesus returns. He reminds us that Isaiah 62:6-7 states that God has appointed watchmen on the walls of Jerusalem that will not give God any rest until Jerusalem is a praise in the earth. This can only happen when Jesus has returned and is ruling in Jerusalem. If you are one of those watchmen, Scripture commands you to keep praying. Zechariah 12-14 describes what will happen when Jesus comes again. The conditions that precede the return of the Lord are described in what is called “Isaiah’s little apocalypse” in Isaiah 24-29. It is not a pleasant picture. The prayers of the saints are a part of what appears to be required for God’s final judgments to be poured out on the Earth according to Revelation 5-8.

So, pray without ceasing!

What it Means to Obey God’s Voice in Difficult Times

May 24th, 2009 · No Comments

This exquisitely insightful teaching deals with what it means to obey God’s voice in difficult times as exemplified in the multi-year ministry of Jeremiah. Dr. Hartmann provides a detailed account of the numerous interactions between God, Jeremiah, and the kings, false prophets and people of Israel in the pivotal period of 608 B.C. and 586 B.C. to show God’s unswerving primary intentions toward His people. The relationship between the passion of God for His people and the complexity of human free will in both an individual and collective dimension is masterfully drawn out of diverse Biblical texts that all relate to this one critical period of time surrounding the Babylonian captivity in the history of Israel. Jeremiah’s perseverance and pain as God’s messenger gives insight for the people of God that find themselves in the midst of an apostate ecclesiastical and political culture.

Why we commit our lives to live for Jesus and the Gospel

May 10th, 2009 · No Comments

Dr. Hartmann elucidates the right motivation for following Jesus and evangelizing the world. It is rooted in God’s promises to Jesus to give him all the nations of the earth in Isaiah 52::13 –53:12, and Psalm 2:8 which ultimately find their fulfillment in Revelation 5:6-10.

The need to walk worthy of the calling of God in Christ Jesus is clearly articulated and the necessity to practically live out ones faith is expressed in the exhortation to read and apply Ephesians 4-6, Colossians 3-4, Romans 12, 1 Peter, 1 John, Matthew 5-7.

if you are looking for the ring of authenticity among the many voices purportedly speaking for God in our day, take note that the plumb line of proper motivation is set in this teaching.

Living on Every Word that Proceeds from the Mouth of God

May 3rd, 2009 · No Comments

Psalm 25:1-7, Isaiah 40:6-8, Deuteronomy 8:1-9 serve as foundational passages of scripture for this practical message of hope. The purposes of God are made evident in this insightful teaching.

Dr. Hartmann begins with the proposition that when God purposes a thing to do that is in his Heart, no one can stop Him. The question arises, what does God want to do and what is a reasonable response in light of His powerful purposes. Dr. Hartmann looks at Psalm 12, which states that the groan of the oppressed is heard by God, and in turn triggers a delivering response by God, according to scripture. Reliance upon God’s faithful Word is encouraged. Psalm 127:1-2 is used to show that people must align their households on the Word of God and His intentions for security and rest. The vanity of endless labor is outlined. God’s absolute sovereignty is evident from Psalm 103:19 and Daniel 4:34-37. God gives amazing examples of His ability to raise up and humble the powerful, to demonstrate His sovereign power. The kingdoms of Pharaoh in Egypt and Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon – each dominate world powers at some point in history are outlined. By looking at the scriptures, one can easily see history repeat itself. According to Deuteronomy 28, Leviticus 26, and Amos 4, the United States that has entered into the early phases of God’s judgment. In light of God’s dreadful power, people are exhorted to obey Jeremiah 18:7-8 in order that calamity be averted and good restored.
