Dr. Hartmann outlines elements of Paul’s stated mission in the book of Romans. Observations are made regarding how the gospel came to the Romans, probably from Jews and proselytes that that were present on the day of Pentecost as recorded in Acts 2:10. Dr. Hartmann fills in additional information about the history and state of the church at Rome from numerous sources including an anonymous fourth century commentator on the epistles of Paul named Ambrosiaster.

A broad outline of Paul’s intentions in the epistle include answering questions about how does the Gospel becomes effectual for salvation, do faith or faith and works count to affect righteousness before God, what is one to make of the Jews place in salvation history during the church age in light of multiple passages within the Old Testament, and how to live the Christian life together in community.
